All colors in the DV Series are AP NON-TOXIC.

Mary Shreves Crow, Wilmington, North Carolina, created "Tea Cat" with a combination of Amaco Engobes, Underglazes, and Amaco LG-10 Clear Glaze.

Designer Velvets are semi-translucent underglazes that have the same distinction as the original Velvet line with the addition of small specks. When left unglazed, they assume the appearance of velvet or velour with a soft speckle effect. When glazed with AMACO Transparent Matte or Clear Glazes, they intensify slightly in color.

Designer Velvets come in two ounce jars, pint jars (DV-3334 and DV-3360) and an assortment of two ounce jars, one of each color.

Designer Velvet (DV) Underglaze Colors (PDF format download)
Designer Velvet colors can be used on greenware or bisque. All colors are lead free. Recommended bisque firing range is Cone 04, but Designer Velvets tolerate a wide firing range with recommended firing temperature being that of the clay used.

To prepare these underglazes, shake and stir for thorough mixing. It is usually not necessary to thin these colors. However, upon occasion or for varying techniques, it may become necessary to thin Designer Velvets. In this case add a few drops of water and mix thoroughly.

Designer Velvets may be brushed (1) on greenware which is to be bisque fired before applying a covering glaze or (2) on a mature Cone 04 (1971°F, 1077°C) bisque, then a covering glaze applied. For opaque coverage by brushing, the consistency of the color in the jar is correct.

AMACO Designer Velvets have only been tested and approved as dinnerware safe when applied and fired under LG-10 Clear Glaze. They should not be used on surfaces which come in contact with food or drink. If left unglazed, AMACO clear glazes LG-9, LG-10, F-10 and HF-9 or any other dinnerware safe glaze are recommended to be used over AMACO Designer Velvets to make them dinnerware safe.
