U Build the Mountain Deluxe Kit Instructions

Instructions

Making a Mountain Tunnel Using Sculptamold

Kit Contents:
AMACO Sculptamold–2 lbs.
AMACO PlasterForm–4” x 180” roll
AMACO WireForm Aluminum Studio Mesh–16” x 20” sheet
Reclosable mixing bag
Instruction Sheet

Additional Supplies Needed:
Base material (cardboard, Styrofoam, wood)
Cardboard cylinder for tunnel (i.e. mailing tube or paper towel holder)
Craft Paint
Scissors
Toothpicks for trees (optional)
Craft sticks (optional)

Instructions:

1. Cut a strip from your cylinder to form tunnel. Place cut side down on base (see illustration no. 1). Crumple newspaper and place around and on top of tunnel and use tape to hold in place.

2. Using the WireForm mesh, place around and on top of newspaper forming mountain. The mesh is flexible so you can stretch, gather, and shape it as you go (see illustration no. 2). Cut with scissors if desired. When shape is complete, staple to base to secure. TIP: If making a volcano (see volcano instructions), be sure to cut a hole in mesh for cups.

3. Cover WireForm mesh with PlasterForm. Following directions on PlasterForm package, apply to mesh then allow to dry overnight (see illustration no. 3).

4. Use Sculptamold to add detail to your mountain. Making sure the Sculptamold bag is tightly closed, shake to mix dry ingredients. Using the separate mixing bag, combine two parts Sculptamold along with one part water. Knead bag until completely mixed. TIP: To prevent waste, mix only as much Sculptamold as you will use in 30 minutes or mixture will begin to harden.

5. Spread or place Sculptamold over mountain until desired terrain is achieved (see illustration no. 4). Continue to use the 2:1 ratio each time you mix more Sculptamold. Wet Sculptamold can be added to dried Sculptamold at any time so don’t feel that you have to complete the entire project at one time.

6. Use fingers or craft sticks to form cracks, lines, and other formations you may want in the mountain. Let mountain dry overnight before painting.

7. (OPTIONAL) Create trees by placing a small amount of Sculptamold on the end of a toothpick. Allow to dry then paint. Stick in sides of mountain.

Make Your Mountain An Erupting Volcano

Additional Supplies Needed:
Recyclable 8 oz. plastic cup
Recyclable 2 oz. plastic cup (eruption cup)
Liquid dish soap
Baking Soda
White vinegar
Red food dye (optional)

Instructions:

1. When forming volcano, place an 8 oz. plastic cup upside down instead of the cardboard cylinder and surround with crumpled newspaper (see illustration no. 5a and b). Use tape to hold newspaper in place. Put the eruption cup on top of the 8 oz. cup (see illustration no. 5c) and surround with additional newspaper (see illustration no. 5d). Follow steps 2 through 6 from Mountain Tunnel instructions to complete the volcano using the WireForm, PlasterForm, and Sculptamold in this kit (see illustration no. 5e). Be sure to press the sides of the volcano up against the small cup to secure it.

2. To make your volcano erupt, place one tablespoon baking soda into the eruption cup. Mix one tablespoon liquid dish soap and 2-3 drops of red food coloring (optional) and pour into the cup. Quickly pour white vinegar into the cup and stand back. The baking soda and vinegar will react quickly, erupting “lava” in seconds. Additional vinegar can be added to continue eruption as long as there is baking soda in the cup.
