Claycrete Instructions

Instructions

Mixing:

Measure into a large bowl or pan approximately 1/8 to 1/4 cup of water for each 1 oz. of dry Claycrete to be mixed. Mix only as much as can be easily used in 30 minutes of modeling time. Claycrete will stick to Claycrete so more can be added later if needed. Add the Claycrete to the water gradually and stir with a fork or spoon until the Claycrete is thoroughly moist. Adding the powder to the water avoids one big lump that is hard to mix. If the mixture is too dry, add more water. If the mixture is too wet, add more Claycrete. The mixture should be rather firm with no excess water. DO NOT MIX BY SQUEEZING WITH HANDS AS THIS WILL CAUSE DRY POCKETS TO FORM. Use immediately after mixing. Store unused Claycrete in an airtight container.

Modeling and Sculpting:

Claycrete will adhere to almost any surface. Since it does not shrink, small objects can be modeled. For large projects choose an armature or core; empty plastic bottles or jugs, cardboard boxes, styrofoam egg cartons, or make an armature from AMACO WireForm metal mesh, wadded newspapers, blown-up balloons, etc. Apply a layer of Claycrete with a spatula or your hand. Model or sculpt with hands, modeling tools, knives, wooden spoons, etc. Keep a pan of water handy for cleaning hands or moistening tools while modeling. Model on a smooth, slick surface (covered by wax paper) so that the Claycrete will not adhere. Place the finished object on a drying rack for even drying.

Drying:

Claycrete dries very slowly (1-2 days) unless dried in the sunshine or by artificial heat such as in an oven at 150°F, 65°C. Claycrete must be thoroughly dry before painting or decorating.

Decorating:

Claycrete may be decorated with any paint, water colors, dry or liquid tempera or with Rub ‘n Buff (wax base metallic finishes, 20 colors available) or any other medium.
