1. The ends of the aluminum frame can be used as guides for sharp clay blades to make straight cuts through a cane.

2. Place your cane on the plastic work surface included and against the sidewall close to the end of the rack (see photo 1). The sidewall will serve as support for the cane while you slice. To prevent the cane from adhering to the aluminum sidewall, use a bit of cornstarch (or other release agent) on that sidewall. Your index finger can be used to pull the cane slightly away from the sidewall and advance it forward as you work. You may want to practice with a log of scrap clay before using an actual cane.

3. Rest the blade above the cane with the bevel of the blade flush with the ends of the aluminum frame (see photo 2). Make your slice, in one long stroke, cutting in the direction toward the side supporting the cane. Holding the blade with the top out from the frame at a slight angle as in photo 3 may give you more control. Always keep the beveled edge flush with the frame.

4. The slicing action will pull the clay on the end of a round cane toward the empty space in the lower corner. As that happens, gently roll the cane with your index finger, and using the end of your blade, gently “re-shape” that pulled clay back to the cane before making another slice.

5. You can also make 45 degree angle cuts with your Professional Bead Baking Rack. Simply place your cane on the work surface as described in step three—but adjacent to the 45 degree angle blade slot (see photo 4). Use the slots to guide your blade to cut the cane.

6. IMPORTANT: ALWAYS REMOVE THE PLASTIC WORK SURFACE FROM THE RACK PRIOR TO PLACING IN THE OVEN FOR BAKING BEADS.
